Southern State Men's Basketball Season Recap

Hillsbor, OH - The Southern State Men's basketball program made a lot of strides in 2016-2017 season and has laid the foundation for future optimism.  The Men's program tallied 9 wins including 4 USCAA wins this season.  This was noticeable increase from the recent seasons on record and they also played very competitively in many other games.  The lack of depth and size contributed to the overall limitations of what could be done on the floor but some building blocks were created."We had players who weren't expected to play significant minute this year, who had to step up and fill voids beyond their skill sets due to roster losses.  The kids really gave me their all and I appreciate it." stated head coach Kelvin Gaines.Caleb Allen(Col. Linden McKinley), Alec Richardson(Blanchester), and USCAA Honorable Mention Jakarr Fry(St. Patricks, KY), were relied upon to carry huge loads from the outset.  "It's difficult to expect freshman to come in and play consistently at this level right ways.  I demanded so much out of these guys and they really grew up over the season." said Coach Gaines. The new coaching staff got the nod later in the summer, so had to use what resoources that they had available to get things moving. Assistant Coach Deshawn Woods has implemented his skill development and conditioning program that will be huge for this coming off season.  "Coach Woods, is right at home when it comes to getting athletes bodies in tip top form.  I'm expecting his conditioning program to really boost and wants to continue the philosophy of having balance between the best players from the local counties and the immediate metopolitan cities.  The Men's team traveled to play a very competitive schedule and plans to play a schedule next season that will consisit of a few more recongnizable NCAA, NCCAA, and USCAA schools.  "We are satisfied about the steps that we've taken this year, but I'm excited about what's in store next year.  I hope to continue to grow a relationship between the program and the community and look to see a lot more faces in the stands next season.  I want to create a vibrant atmosphere that is welcoming to any and everyone.  Will will continue our philosophy of educating young men and building winners in the process."
